MATERIAL FIELD

How our estimates work

Every result starts with measured volume, then applies material density, waste, purchasing units, and price.

Volume

Rectangular volume equals length × width × depth. We convert inches to feet and cubic feet to cubic yards using exactly 27 ft³ per yd³.

Weight and purchasing

Planning defaults are asphalt 145 lb/ft³, gravel 105 lb/ft³, crushed-stone aggregate base 139 lb/ft³, and normal-weight concrete 150 lb/ft³. Supplier-specific values take priority.

Primary source checks

The Federal Highway Administration estimating table lists hot asphalt mix at 145.2 lb/ft³ and aggregate base at 139.0 lb/ft³. National Ready Mixed Concrete Association training material describes normal concrete at about 140–150 lb/ft³. Iowa State University Extension and UF/IFAS Extension document mulch volume and coverage conversions.

We independently cross-check formulas against published sources. This is not a professional review or stamped engineering advice.

Waste and cost

The editable default allowance is 10%. Cost equals rounded purchase quantity × entered unit price. Delivery minimums, taxes, labor, and site preparation are excluded.

Limitations

Verify field conditions, specifications, density, and order quantity with a qualified local contractor or supplier.
