How the calculation works
We use No weight conversion for bulk mulch.
Formula: bed area in ft² × depth in inches ÷ 324
Worked example
An 18 × 6 ft bed at 3 in depth requires exactly 1 cubic yard before waste.
Measure the plantable bed
Measure bed length and average width, subtract large unmulched areas, and choose the intended settled depth.
Frequently asked questions
What mulch depth should I enter?
Choose a depth appropriate to the mulch, plants, and site; many applications use a few inches.
Does mulch need a density?
No. This calculator estimates bulk volume, not weight.
