Gravel Calculator

Estimate loose gravel for paths, drainage, landscape beds, and other rectangular areas.

Project measurements

Replace the planning density

Ask the supplier for loose bulk density for the exact aggregate, grading, and moisture condition before ordering.

Tons to Cubic Yards

How the calculation works

We use 105 lb/ft³ adjustable planning assumption.

Formula: length × width × depth × 105 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000

Worked example

A 30 × 10 ft area at 4 in deep, plus 10% waste, requires about 5.8 tons for ordering.

Measure the placed gravel layer

Measure the finished footprint and average depth, separating areas with different depths or shapes.

Frequently asked questions

Is every gravel 105 lb/ft³?

No. The default is a planning assumption; actual bulk density varies substantially.

Does the estimate account for compaction?

Only through the waste allowance. Confirm delivered-to-compacted yield with the supplier.

Sources and assumptions

Transparent 105 lb/ft³ gravel planning assumption; supplier bulk density controls final tonnage.
